Miele vs Dyson: Which Is Worth The Money?

Updated on January 11, 2023

Miele and Dyson are among the leading manufacturers of domestic appliances in the world. Over the last few years, they have been trading blows in a war of product vs product reviews. Most consumers will be greatly familiar with this battle thanks to popular consumer-purchase websites like Consumer Reports and Which?.

Domestic appliances are among one of the most competitive markets in any country, followed closely by consumer automobiles. If you have ever visited a review site for one of these products, you know that they are already an expense by themselves, not counting repairs and replacements.

The Miele and Dyson companies have gained quite a lot of notoriety among the consumerist community for their claims in these reviews. Miele has a reputation for producing more expensive products but for a higher standard of quality. Dyson, on the other hand, has gained a reputation of being overpriced but with excellent build quality.

New Technology & Releases

While this battle has been going on for well over a decade, it seems to have reached new heights due to both manufacturers recent releases of new models. The latest in development from Dyson is an all-new design and many say that this represents an upgrade in quality and reliability from previous Dyson models. However, this new model promises some impressive specifications such as 1.3 times the suction power of their previous model. Additionally, it will include an entirely new toolset and improved design.

Miele, on the other hand, has recently released a new model series to compete with Dyson’s new product line. This new Miele line promises a vacuum that is truly 1/3 smaller than other leading brands. The smallest unit in this line is 54% shorter and 31% lighter than comparable models. While this may be true, many brand-loyal Dyson users are up in arms about this proposal because they do not see how a powerful vacuum can be reduced to such a size. As a side note, Dyson currently offers several models with units that are even smaller than this new Miele model.

Unfortunately, a few things consumers cannot do much about is the price of these products. First of all, Miele vacuums are very expensive. For example, the smallest Miele device costs $1,295, which is many hundreds of dollars more than competitors. The Dyson models in their current line have similar prices to this. While several other brands offer vacuums with similar performance to Miele devices that cost less money and less than Dyson’s machines, they are mostly unavailable in the US market while Miele products are regularly available at any department store or speciality shop you care to visit.

For a vacuum that costs over $200, you would expect it to last a long time. While any vacuum will eventually wear out, many Dyson vacuums have received negative reviews for having early failures. While some of these failures are due to misuse (i.e. leaving the unit running inside an enclosed space) or damage that occurred during use, other parts on these models commonly fail earlier than expected. This is another area where Miele shines with their high-quality design and build – the parts last much longer than those in Dyson models which should give you confidence in the brand’s longevity.

Conclusion

While Dyson certainly has a reputation for having high-quality products, Miele is no slouch in this regard. When it comes to performance and reliability, Miele is on par with Dyson and even more affordable. However, the biggest reason why Dyson seems to be more popular among consumers is because of its bright ideas. For example, they were one of the first manufacturers to add washable filters in most models or canisters and remove the need for replacement bags.

This relationship between the two companies is rather straightforward. Miele has been designing and manufacturing their vacuum units for over seventy years while Dyson is only twenty years old. In order to compete with such a seasoned company, Dyson would need to provide the same quality that they expect of their premier product, the robot vacuum. Since that is not happening, it appears that they are willing to offer a lower-cost model, just like every other company does.
